Live Backstage at the American Music Awards

Aretha appeared on the American Music Awards live via satellite from the Premier Center in Sterling Heights, Michigan, to perform and receive two awards. Two production crews, one from Los Angeles–based Dick Clark Productions and the other from WXYZ ABC in Detroit, started their work on the set at 6:00 a.m. for the 8:00 p.m. live telecast.

As she waited for the awards to be announced, Aretha was backstage in her dressing room with her son Teddy, brother Cecil, and sister-in-law Earline. Aretha had changed into a white sequined mini and was relaxing on the velvet sofa barefoot while listening for cues from the Los Angeles director. She won awards for Female Video Artist Soul/R&B and Female Artist Soul/R&B. When she accepted her second award, she tried to hold back her tears, saying, “I would like to accept it in memory of my dad, Reverend C. L. Franklin.” Her 1986 appearance would be the last time she was on the AMAs.
